Pokémon

Pokémon is a media franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, centered around fictional creatures called “Pokémon.” In the Pokémon universe, humans known as Pokémon Trainers capture and train these creatures to battle each other for sport. The franchise began with video games developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, starting with Pokémon Red and Green (Blue in international releases) in the mid-1990s. It has since expanded to include an animated television series, movies, trading card games, toys, and various merchandise.

The name “Pokémon” is derived from the Japanese brand “Pocket Monsters” (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā), which combines the English words “pocket” and “monsters.” Pokémon encompasses a diverse range of species, each with unique abilities, types, and characteristics. The franchise is known for its themes of adventure, friendship, and competition, as players and characters engage in battles, explore worlds, and complete tasks. The aim of many games within the series often includes becoming a Pokémon Champion or completing the Pokédex, an in-game encyclopedia of Pokémon species. Pokémon has become a significant part of popular culture worldwide, influencing various forms of entertainment and spawning a dedicated fanbase.
